Tbh my personal interpretation of the Cthulhu Mythos is as much comedy as it is cosmic horror. The horrors of existence persist but much of the "terrors too awful to perceive" are more a case of closed minded and racist unreliable narrators than anything. Do you really trust the judgement of someone who thinks penguins are grotesque and unnatural? I wouldn't. Knowledge given directly from Nyarlathotep or Yog-Sothoth? Yeah. Nyarlathotep is an extraterrestrial conman who is essentially doing the equivalent of magic tricks to confuse puppies then taking credit for human inventions retroactively ancient aliens style. Nyarlathotep is a weeaboo for Ancient Egypt. Yog-Sothoth is high off its incomprehensible ass all the time. A shoggoth is an outdoor cat. A ghoul is an off leash dog. Richard Upton Pickman is a furry. It is more cosmically silly than anything else, you understand?

My opinion on malevolent the podcast is that it's technically good (like idk the sound effects, the actors, the quality of sound), but in other aspects it sucks

Ngl after the first episode of the first season I thought that it would be something Chambers-like??? That this entity is just playing its game, pretending to be poor helpless creature with memory-loss or sort of, but secretly leading the main character directly to their open maw which they will close in a proper moment

But nooooo, here we have a deity which consists of multiple parts of soul, which was trapped in books and which now is trying to collect all the parts

And this entity is genuinely just a part of Hastur's soul locked inside the book (and afterwards getting stuck inside main character's head, controlling his eyes good luck to survive with something non-humane which doesn't know how our world is functioning — but wait, for some reason this thing does know about all the human moral rules and other things; did it become an integral and non-separable part of his mind or what the heck happened???

And it would be even okaaay somehow, although it sounds like a shitty headcanon on the original lore of this character and it would be better for this podcast not to parasitise on Cthulhu Mythos ngl, but here we also have a STRONNNNNGGGGGG main character who is able to defeat a god (or the god is way too weak I don't know what happened)

And by the way, the part of Hastur's soul, which is stuck inside the main character, somehow is becoming more humane I don't know??? Like for what purpose and for what reason???? Why the entity (even its part) will be willing to become like mortals, to be by their side? It's absurd and it's something which is definitely not in the manner of Cthulhu Mythos and not in the manner of the King in Yellow from stories, where gods are something _really_ otherlike, their minds work in absolutely different ways than ours

And it's without mentioning that the main characters are reaaaallly slow-thinkers, which is why for me this podcast was horribly boring — I knew what's gonna happen and was just waiting for like idk 30 minutes for it to actually happen (and for these stupid guys to figure out what's going on meh)

I don't know whether it's a summary, but maybe it is

This podcast spoiled the character (I mean Hastur) — they were shown like something weak and even obedient sometimes, not able to collect themselves, not able to travel and to go wherever they want and whenever they want (they were like half-alive jellyfish passively floating and getting sucked into random portals wtf), for some reason locked inside the book and separated by parts (w t f....) and being capable of just throwing empty threats

While in the original stories the King in Yellow was quite unpredictable and picky one, definitely someone with non-human mind, they were able to manipulate peoples' minds and maybe even space (I'm not sure of it; but anyway they could move freely I think); their motivation was not clear, but for me it seemed like they were doing all these things for their own pleasure and entertainment

They didn't serve anyone, they definitely didn't look like someone obedient — c'mon, it's a king with their own dimension and a deity, to whom can they serve?

I feel like in the world of HP lovecraft, amongst the big names like cthulhu, azathoth, yog-sothoth and the infamous nyarlathotep.No one even mention Nodens-the Lord of the great abyss. Cuz that dude sole purpose is to piss off Nyarlathotep. He’s a good elder god for this sole reason (even in ancient britain he depicted as a healing god).

Let me explain

As an Elder God. Nodens' behavior is generally quite kind towards humans, but he only acts this way when he is at odds with Nyarlathotep. Of course, because Dream World is a battlefield and Nyarlathotep and Nodens' war is a proxy war. That's when Nyarlathotep tried every way to stop the travelers from searching for the Kadath desert, Nodens was willing to find every way to protect them, that's how he indirectly angered Nyarlathotep without directly confronting him. Nodens' servants are the Nightgaunts. According to some sources in the Canon, Nodens enjoys hunting animals in places like the Underworld, his targets include Shantak, Hunting Horror and moon beasts.

•Proxy war

When humanity began to spread and explore every corner of the Earth. The Great Ones eventually sought new settlements in Dreamland, including the fortress of Kadath. Nodens himself has quite good relationships with the Grand Masters, and he sometimes monitors Kadath's surroundings to prevent humans from threatening them. Nyarlathotep himself is the same, but Nyarlathotep's main job in Dreamland is to enforce the will of the blind fool and the other supreme foreign gods of the center. Filled with vulgar complaints, with the demon king's will, Nyarlathotep wished for the gods of earth to be protected from human encroachment.

In general, the goals of Nyarlathotep and Nodens are the same. But that didn't mean Nodens had to be friendly with the foreign gods, so he continuously committed acts of sabotage against Nyarlathotep at DreamWorld. And Nyarlathotep felt uncomfortable with Nodens, which was quoted by Randolph Carter when he spoke to Nyarlathotep at Kadath. Nodens is considered a counterpart to Nyarlathotep in Lovecraft's works, but he is not friendly towards humans, he only saves them and is kind to them when he wants to oppose Nyarlathotep, inciting the wrath of Nyarlathotep. those who are considered God... an Outer God.

Lovecraft protagonists will spend 3/4 of the story casually going over how they got bored of average New England life and started robbing graves for fun and some people stared at me and I thought they looked fishy and had five rows of teeth and ate live frogs from my pond but my friend, Dean of the Department of Eugenics at Miskatonic University, went to Africa once and said that's normal there. Sometimes I shoot them because they smell bad and they don't die but as a man of Science I don't believe in shit like werewolves and there's definitely a rational explanation for this. Something came out of the sea in my dreams and there was weird music, so now I'm actually getting the heebie jeebies. Maybe I was wrong about werewolves.

But here's the Big Reveal. The Real Scary Part: They were fish people all along. And the sound wasn't werewolves. I found out there's this instrument called a Theremin that makes sound without touching it, which is creepy and unnatural. Apparently some Russian guy invented it but I'm pretty sure the Primitive Russians could never invent something so otherworldly so I have come to terms with the existence of aliens and the absence of a loving god.
